The Great Temple Mound, Ocmulgee National Monument 14
Centuries before the founding of Macon, this plateau was the scene of an impressive religious and political center. Today the site is noted for its remarkable ancient mounds, the largest of which rises 55 feet above the Macon Plateau. The Great Temple mound was built by thousands of laborers carrying bags of earth.
