The Monteponi processing plant extracted zinc and lead from sulfide ore by means of roasting, oxidizing sulfur to sulfuric acid, which was neutralized with calcium hydroxide, producing gypsum with high iron oxide concentration, deposited as tailings of reddish coloured mud. Plant and tailings are archeological heritage.
