The ruins of St. Paul's monastery, Jarrow

These unassuming monastic ruins at Jarrow are on the site of one of Europe’s most influential centres of learning and culture in the 7th and 8th centuries. The monastery’s reputation spread throughout Europe, chiefly because of the scholarly writings of the Venerable Bede, who wrote more than 60 works.

The present ruins are from the medieval monastery, re-established in the 11th century, that also include part of the Anglo-Saxon monastery in the form of the chancel of St Paul’s Church.
