Waitomo Glowworm Centre
In the Waitomo Glowworm Caves live the larvae of an endemic fungus gnat Arachnocampa luminosa. As the name implies the larvae are capable of bioluminescence. The larvae produce stiky thread that hang from the top of the caves. With their blue-green bioluminescence they attract insects that are searching for a way out of the caves. The caves are a tourist attraction – the ceiling looks somewhat like the stary sky at night.
