The wide beach here extends for eight miles, dominated by 235-foot Haystack Rock. The town, originally known as Elk Creek, was renamed in 1922 for a cannon lost by a US naval vessel in 1846 and found again in 1898. Two more cannons from the same source were found in 2008.
