Catedral Porto, cloister, north gallery
Portugal

On the south side of the Cathedral opens the Gothic cloister, a work commissioned by Bishop D. João III and started in 1385, contemporary with the construction of the Batalha Monastery. On each side of the court, four broken arches open, inscribing in each of them an oculus and three smaller arches, supported by double columns with vegetal capitals.

In 1726--1727, eight excellent Baroque portals were designed, designed by the Italian master Nicolau Nasoni, enriching at the same time, with finishes also by Nasoni, the four old cloister doorways. The Gothic cloister thus began to boast, alongside its medieval lines, abundant elements of Baroque style.

The tile panels ordered from the ceramic center of Madragoa in Lisbon were placed in the four galleries of the cloister between 1729-1731 and are attributed to Valentim de Almeida (Painter of Azulejos de Lisboa, contemporary of the Johannine period of the "Great Production" of Policarpo de masters Oliveira and Bernardes and Bartolomeu Antunes). From the side wall of Casa do Cabido:

Currently there are seven large panels of tiles, each devoted to a theme, although until the restoration of the Cathedral in 1940 there were 8 panels. The main theme is the Old Testament Song of Songs, used in religious art mainly since the counter-reform.
