It is the nature of tallest trees to be eventually, often quickly, superseded as their tops die, break off in storms, or are struck by lightning. This tree, also known as the Klootchy Creek Sitka Spruce Giant, was once recognized as the largest Sitka spruce in the US and the largest tree of any kind in Oregon. It was 200 feet tall and 17 feet in diameter, with a crown spread of 93 feet. But on December 2, 2007 a windstorm broke the massive trunk off at the eighty foot level. More was removed later by the park department in the interests of safety.
