On the production floor at Headen and Quarmby, one of the last producers of British-made lingerie in the UK. Mixing traditional manufcaturing and finishing technique with modern design, the firm makes Kinky Knickers Championed by retail guru Mary Portas – and featured on a Channel 4 TV series 'The Bottom Line – each pair is handcrafted by local apprentices, and comes in a gorgeous vintage-inspired gift box. Leading retailers, including Liberty, Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, House of Frazer, ASOS, Boots and others embraced the chance to carry the cheekily retro, 100% British underwear.
When this was photographed in 2012 it was a rare example of a company flying the flag for British manufacturing, even as traditional industries such as textiles continued to offshore. However in January 2014 the company announced it was going into receivership, calling the future of the business into question, and tempering the good news generated by the launch two years earlier.
