Milford Sound is one of the most popular tourist destinations in New Zealand. Many tourists will take a boat trip around the Fiord or even take a scenic flight in the area. Mitre Peak dominates the view of the Fiord from Milford Sound. Most people that arrive here with a camera would find it hard to resist the temptation to take a few shots of the Peak, though not many of those people would have the chance to take a photo from the opposite side, looking down into the Fiord.
The climb itself involves a boat trip to the base and a hard steep walk through dense forest until the treeline. It is around this area that the climb becomes very exposed, there are steep drops over 1 kilometre down into the Sinbad valley, or the Fiord on the other side. Climbing is not for the faint hearted and should only be done with careful planning and proper safety gear.
