Above our view point rise the jagged Redstone Peaks, the remnants of an ancient volcano torn part millions of years ago by the action of plate tectonics. Below, the other worldly landscape shows a similarly violent past with the greenish brown of the Muddy Mountains to the north thrown up and over old red Aztec sandstone.
The Redstone Rocks trail is immediately below, opposite the pale gray green limestone ridge between us. To the north, another outcrop of the Redstone Rocks is visible. Farthest north, below the peaks of the Muddy Mountains, the Bowl of Fire shows red against the brown green. If we could see through the Muddy Mountains to the other side, we would glimpse the sister red rocks of Valley of Fire State Park.
