Rhône River
Switzerland
The Rhône River is born in the Rhône Glacier, that we can see in these panorama, on the eastern end of the canton Valais powered by alpine glaciers of the central Alps. With a length of 812 km bathes the Switzerland and France and flows into the Mediterranean Sea near Marseille where it forms a large delta. In the 1960s, the bed of the Rhône has undergone renovations that transformed the river into a navigable and extensive source of hydroelectric power area. Navigable from Le Parc, but it is from Lyon to Arles which has an intense shipping traffic. Through the Saône River, its largest tributary, the navigation of the Rhone can join through channels, the Loire, Seine, Rhine and Moselle rivers. Nowadays the Rhône Valley is the second most extensive vineyard producer of fine wines from France. It is almost unbelievable that in 1856 the Rhône Glacier stretched to the location where this panorama was photographed.
