Covered bridges were developed to protect valuable structural timbers from the decay they would suffer if exposed to the weather. They were common in pioneer days everywhere in North America with enough timber, but are now mostly historic relics. However they continued to be built in Oregon well into the 20th century (this one in 1921) and many still carry traffic on lightly used country roads.
