St. Johns Bridge - Thelma Taylor murder (aerial)
USA

This 300' aerial view shows the St. Johns Bridge in Northwest Portland, Oregon as it crosses the Willamette River.  Opened on June 13, 1931, it spans a total length of 2,067 feet.  When it was completed, it had the highest clearance in the nation & was the longest suspension bridge west of Detroit, Michigan.  Cathedral Park lies below where weddings take place & the bridge itself has also been a problematic jumpoff site for suicides.

WARNING!: Description below may be disturbing to some readers.

The park is also home to the murder of Thelma Taylor (1933-1949) who was kidnapped by an ex-convict named Morris Leland.  Back then the area was undeveloped & contained a lot of brush.  The two had spent the night underneath the St. Johns Bridge where Leland tried to make advances towards her.  They slept under the bridge until next morning when Taylor awoke & began screaming after hearing workers in a nearby train yard.  Leland then ultimately killed & buried her under a pile of driftwood.  He was arrested for auto theft five days later on August 11, 1949 where he confessed to Taylor's kidnapping & death.  He would be executed by the gas chamber on January 9, 1953 at the Oregon State Penitentiary.  With the opening the Cathedral Park in 1980, there is still much folklore in the area even to this day about the park being haunted by Taylor & her screaming.

More About USA

The United States is one of the most diverse countries on earth, jam packed full of amazing sights from St. Patrick's cathedral in New York to Mount Hollywood California. The Northeast region is where it all started. Thirteen British colonies fought the American Revolution from here and won their independence in the first successful colonial rebellion in history. Take a look at these rolling hills carpeted with foliage along the Hudson river here, north of New York City. The American south is known for its polite people and slow pace of life. Probably they move slowly because it's so hot. Southerners tend not to trust people from "up north" because they talk too fast. Here's a cemetery in Georgia where you can find graves of soldiers from the Civil War.The West Coast is sort of like another country that exists to make the east coast jealous. California is full of nothing but grizzly old miners digging for gold, a few gangster rappers, and then actors. That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains. Up in the northwest corner you can find creative people in places like Portland and Seattle, along with awesome snowboarding and good beer. Text by Steve Smith.
