Dingle Peninsula - Corca Dhuibhne - Near Gallarus Oratory
Ireland
The Gallarus Oratory on the Dingle Peninsula is overlooking the harbour of Ard na Caithne. It was discovered by Charles Smith in 1756. When was the Oratory built? What was its original purpose? What does the name mean? These question remain have received many answers: a Romanesque church of the 12th century, a shelter for pilgrims, a private burial chapel, … Trial cuttings in November 1970 could shed no light on the questions.
