In 1902, the "Marienbad" was originally built as a private bath in the "Art Nouveau" style. In 1924 it was taken over by the City of Freiburg and the bath became public. In 1938 a large hall with an appropriate basin was added. In the early 1970s the bath was closed and for the first time put into service as a theater. Heavy protest by the citizens of Freiburg led to a new start as a bath in 1984 but already in 1985 it was shut down for good. Since 1997 the large hall is being used by the „Kunstverein Freiburg“ (Freiburg Art Association). The Marienbad is home of the Freiburger Kinder und Jugendtheater.
