Imbriogion Demircili Silifke Vr Mersin 1e2
Turkey
Imbrigion, which is a Roman city known for its mausoleums dated to the 2nd century AD, is located in Demircili Neighborhood, 6 km north of Silifke District. The first mausoleum in the site is around Öter Kale (fortress) on the left of the road while going into the neighborhood from İmranlı. There are ten columns at the bottom of the front part of the structure and 4 other columns carrying the Korinth style caps at the top. There is also a rock-tomb situated next to this structure. The most significant pieces are the two mausoleums standing side by side about 300 m away from this point on the right. Architectural ornaments and artistic figures, epitaphs, reliefs and statues of different animals on those two-tier tomb structures indicate that they belonged to an important family. The two human busts are represented as reliefs. The single storey tomb on the left, on the other hand, reflects all the characteristics of the Korinth order. We can see the remains of an archeological site and a tower on the hill a bit further away from these tombs. Apart from these tombs, there stands another mausoleum called Sivri Kale (literally: Beaked/Pointy Fortress) on the eastern part of the road. The pyramid roof of the structure covered with tile stones is particularly interesting. The construction of the internal part of this structure is quite different from the tombs mentioned before. Going down the road, there is another mausoleum about the end of the neighborhood. Its roof is covered with square tiles. Gargoyles, on the other hand, are made in the form of lion heads. Both front and rear pediments are decorated with reliefs of shields. The epitaph of the mausoleum has fallen down. There lies a sarcophagus in front of the mausoleum.
