Limerick - King John's Castle, View I
Ireland
The city of Limerick (Luimneach) lies on the shores of the river Shannon. The original core of the city was located on the King’s Island protected by King John’s Castle. The castle was built on order of King John (John Lackland, Johan sanz Terre, brother of Richard the Lionhearted. John was appointed Lord of Ireland in 1177) round about 1200. In the Irish Rebellion of 1641 parts of the wall of the castle were severely damaged by an Irish Confederate force by digging under the foundations. From 2011 to 2013 a huge restoration of the castel was done.
