It constitutes a spectacular and grandiose example of a typically Roman monument in a city with a strong Greek influence, which became a Roman military colony by the seo of Augustus in the year 21 a.C.
Partly it is built and partly carved into the rock. Of considerable size, it presents a cávea (space for the spectators) elliptical on three levels with a portico on top.
Dated between the third and fourth centuries AD, recent studies indicate a dating in the time of Augustus, with modifications in later times.
Image taken one hour after the opening of the Archaeological Park to visits, specifically 9:30 am, on a sunny August morning. At that time there were some visitors, which are not included in the panorama, but a little later the enclave was crowded with numerous groups of tourists on organized visits.
