On a tufa deposit at Pyramid Lake
Nevada
Deposits of tufa, created by underwater springs when the lake level was higher, ring this huge high desert lake. The pyramid after which the lake was named by John C. Fremont in 1844, composed of tufa, can be seen directly across the lake from here. The Pyramid area is no longer accessible to the public.
