Shrine of the Virgin of Ara
Extremadura

The Shrine of Our Lady of Ara is situated in the foothills of Sierra Morena, about seven miles from Fuente del Arco (Badajoz). Everything that surrounds the place is rich in archaeological, surfacing mainly Roman remains, making it possible to suspect the existence of some cultural and religious center pre-Christian.

The prior santiaguista Don García Ramírez ordered the construction of the sanctuary, almost at his expense. The building dates from the late fourteenth century. At first there was only the church. I had no steeple, and had no dressing room. And there were some outbuildings of which still remains.
