Silver Lake is a shallow lake with a surrounding alpine marsh that fills the lower portions of Brighton Basin at the head of Big Cottonwood Canyon and the headwaters of Big Cottonwood Creek. An easily accessible boardwalk and well maintained trail complete a loop around the lake, wandering through pines and aspens.
Big Cottonwood Creek serves as an important fresh water source for communities in the Salt Lake valley below. The interpretive nature walk around the lake includes signs helping to educate visitors on the importance of maintaining the pristine environment of the lake in order to preserve good drinking water for the city below the canyon.
