South Canyon
Arizona
The UPS route is the opening center of this panorama. The break-over point from the flat prairie to the sharp cliffs is one place in Marble Canyon where there is a break in Kaibab Limestone, Toroweap Formation, Coconino Sandstone. Hermit Shale, Esplanade Sandstone, and the rest of the Supai Formation. The break is along a fault that has disrupted the lay of the land such that a chute has formed from the top of the cliff down into the bed of Bedrock Canyon just before its confluence with South Canyon. The UPS route is not much of a trail at all but it can be negotiated by following the numerous, possibly hundreds, of small rock cairns. The most difficult part is route finding down the first couple hundred feet through the Kaibab Limestone step-like cliffs. There are several “false routes” marked by cairns where different people have decided their route might be better.
