The ruins of Ballinskelligs Castle, County Kerry
Ireland

Ballinskelligs Castle is also known as McCarthy Mór Castle. Situated at the opposite end of the beach from Ballinskelligs Abbey, the 16th century tower house was built by the McCarthy’s, who were the Chieftains of Cork and Kerry.

Little is known about its history but its purpose was to protect the bay from pirates and also as a stronghold from which to charge a tariff on passing ships.
