Cambuskenneth Abbey was founded in 1147 by King David I to serve the nearby Stirling Castle. It is unique in Scotland for its free-standing gothic bell tower which, unlike the rest of the monastery complex, remains largely intact. The abbey was the location for two of Robert the Bruce’s parliaments in 1314 and 1326. It is also the burial place of King James III and Margaret of Denmark in the late 1480s. Their graves are marked by a stone monument which was erected by order of Queen Victoria.
