哈尔滨是一座极具欧陆风情的北国名城，1994年被确定为国家级历史文化名城。
中央大街则是哈尔滨的突出代表和显著标志。1986年,哈尔滨市人民政府将中央大街步行街确定为保护街路，1997年6月1日将其改造成全国第一条商业步行街。1998年，中央大街步行街获得了“全国百城万店无假货示范街”、“全国青年文明号”示范基地等荣誉称号。2006年3月又被中央八部委评为全国“百城万店无假货”活动先进单位。2006年4月被国家建设部评为“中国人居环境范例奖”。2006年首届哈尔滨十大城市名片评选活动中，中央大街被评为哈尔滨的城市名片。2008年评为“哈尔滨十佳名景”。
它北起松花江防洪纪念塔，南至经纬街，全长1450延长米，宽21.34米。其中车行方石路为10.8米宽。全街建有欧式及仿欧式建筑71栋，并汇集了文艺复兴、巴洛克、折衷主义及现代多种风格保护建筑13栋。一条小小的街道，含括了西方建筑史上最有影响的四大建筑流派，含括了欧洲最具魅力的近300年文化发展史，其含括历史的精深久远和展示建筑艺术的博大多姿，为世上少见。
