Located near Vya, Nevada, the large boulder across the fence is Forty Nine Rock, an important stop along the Applegate Trail which spurred off the California Trail to the Applegate Valley in Oregon. Here close by used to exist Forty Nine House, a wayside stopping point along the freight & stage road, however it burned many years ago. The small marker states, "The number of foot and horse packers is increasing day by day and the road is lined with them. John H. Benson, Sep. 1, 1849". The number 49 used to be painted on the rock with axle grease by emigrants & it has since been repainted many times today, leaving an imprint in the tuff. The entire area is open range for livestock.
