At the bottom of the large tailings pile of the Alta Mine west of Smith River, California. The copper mine dates back to the Civil War era & was one of the chief copper mines in the region. The Low Divide Road passes nearby, once the site of the town of Altaville, a stage coach stop as the current road was an old wagon road connecting Crescent City to the mining town of Jacksonville, Oregon via a long windy approach through the Klamath Mountains. Altaville fluorished between 1863 & 1865 but as the Civil War ended & the need for copper dwindled, the town died with it.
