Franconie

Altenburg castle stands on a mountain peak on the edge of the Steigerwald height and is considered a landmark of Bamberg. The slender tower greets far into the Frankish country. First mentioned in 1109. In the 14th and 15th century the castle was the residence for the Bishops of Bamberg. After its destruction in 1553 the old castle was rebuilt in the Age of Romanticism.
