Legend has it that back in history, King Coriolanus's son, Prince Bladud, had a skin disease which was so terrible that he was forced into banishment.
He lived by keeping a herd of pigs - but they too caught the disease. One day, along the banks of the Avon, they came across a pool of hot mud with water gushing from the ground. He was surprised to see that the pigs were cured after wallowing in the mud and he tried it for himself - and was cured so he was able to return to the court.
He became King on his father's death, and decided to build his palace on the spot where he was cured.
That is why pigs are important to Bath.
