A 300' aerial view overlooking Big Pine, Calfornia at the base of the Sierra Nevada in the Owens Valley. The town has a population of 1,875 as of 2020 & is a recreation access to the mountains & ancient bristlecone pine forest. The town had a landmark case in 1923 when 15 year old Alice Piper wanted to attend Big Pine school but was not allowed to due to her Native American ancestry. The case Piper v. Big Pine resulted in her victory w/ the passage of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, allowing Native American children the right to attend public schools. This case would also be referenced down the road in the more famous 1954 Brown v. Board of Education.
