Brochel Castle , Raasay , Scotland

Brochel Castle was built in the late 15th / early 16th century . It was occupied until 1671 .

It was an ingenious castle design as it was built on top of a 15m high stack-like volcanic plug .

It was built as a strategic base for a dynasty of reiving seadogs from which they could protect their possessions and the Inner Sound which separates Raasay from the mainland of Scotland .
