Buckshot Mine - crosscut [1]

Interior of the Buckshot Mine in the Inyo Mountains outside of Independence, California.  This abandoned lead/silver/gold mine has a large tailings pile outside & bores primarily through limestone.  Most work was done over 100 years ago w/ the oldest carbide lamp signatures coinciding w/ the 1920s.  This view shows the main crosscut at a junction room.  The two passages spur off - the left approach breaks into a few other tunnels & features a couple of ore chutes & even a glimpse of a large stope.  The right passage reaches a flooded winze w/ an eerie ladder lying under the water.  The crosscut itself can be explored for about 1/2 mile from the entrance until one reaches a massive cave-in at a wet section of the mine where the bedrock is weaker.
