Following 1830's invasion of Algiers, France destroyed large sectors of the Casbah.
Origianally the city stretched from the top of the hill (the Citadel) to the sea.
The biggest destructions affected the lower parts, where new buildings, squares and roads were constructed.
Today, in several sectors, European-style blocks intersperse the traditional pre-colonial architecture.
