Cave church of Olleros de Pisuerga
Northern Spain

The Church of Saints Justo and Pastor is one of the best examples of rock architecture of the several cave churches existing in the high course of the Ebro river.

It seems that the work was originally reduced to a small hermitage in what is now the sacristy and would be made at the time of repopulation (IXth. or Xth. centuries) by Mozarabic people fleeing Al-Andalus, although some authors trace their origin to the seventh century inside the hermitic movements present in the area.

At the end of XIIth. was extended to two pointed barrel naves in which even the transverse arches were simulated. These two naves are preceded by semi-circular oven-vaulted apses and supported by four pilasters of which only that of the choir exists today, the other three badly damaged were substituted by columns in the seventeenth century.

The baptismal font is carved from a single block of sandstone and has no decoration.

The church has been restored recently and has received several awards.
