Vernon Mine - lower adit mine dump

The Vernon Mine is a gold mine north of Yreka, California.  I have not been able to find much information on this long abandoned mine.  This was taken at the lower adit w/ the original miner's cabin & partially caved portal nearby, way forgotten & overgrown.  The mine itself consists of two adits, this shaft goes in about 1,000 feet w/o ever reaching any quartz vein, which is where gold is typically extracted.  A project that cost money & produced little; of course that is the common story of past prospecting.  I was eye level w/ a temperature inversion that caused fog to hover over the Shasta Valley w/ Mt. Shasta poking above, which is honestly not too uncommon.  At times though the fog did ascend higher & it got cold & misty for a bit.  The scene almost gave the imagination of miners coming out of the mountain hauling gangue material in ore carts & dumping it over the edge into the clouds below.
