Fantasy Canyon is an erosion feature set in an ancient lake bed in the Uinta Basin. During the formation of the Rocky Mountains 40 to 50 million years ago, broad lake basins appeared between the uplifting mountains. One of those basins, Lake Uinta collected sand, silt and clay carried by rivers from the Uinta mountains to the north. With pressure and time, that material became sandstone and shale. The erosion of the softer shale produced the very fine features observed in this little canyon.
The shale deposits are also rich in oil, natural gas, and other hydrocarbon deposits. Driving to Fantasy Canyon through the badlands south of Vernal, you'll pass many oil and gas wells and probably a few trucks hauling the extracted raw material back to the refineries.
