Franz Josef Glacier
The Franz Josef and Fox glaciers are unusual in that they terminate at such a low altitude (300m above sea level) and are surrounded by rainforest. The Franz Josef glacier has retreated on average over the last 70 years, although at times it has advanced at a rate of 70cm per day. It is believed to have extended to the sea around 15,000 years ago.
