Grand Central, Atrium Ground Floor

In September 2015 the re-developed Birmingham New Street station and the new Grand Central shopping centre opened. This replaced the previous shopping centre that had been built in 1971 above New Street station. The new development was a breath of fresh air in comparison to what had previously existed, light open and spacious was something the old centre wasn't.

Changes like these don't happen over night, in fact it took 5 years. The center piece is the new Atrium, a large open area providing natural light. To achieve this 6,000 tonnes of concreate was removed to create the space. This wasn't the only change made with the existing structure being modified complely out of recognition. If this wasn't already difficult enough it all took place above one of the UK's major rail hubs that couldn't close.

The building is broken into two parts. The ground flood is the concorse area for the station below, and contains some cafe's, bars and shops. It is not until you get to the first floor that the shopping center starts. There are over 60 shops and a large number of eateries that circle the artium. But it is not just the inside that got a facelift with the outside being give a much more moden look and three "media eyes" to show information on.

What you can see in this panorama is the main Atrium.
