Hanseatic city of Hasselt The Old Town Hall
The Old Town Hall is a late Gothic building and is created in two phases. The eastern part was completed in 1550, as can be seen on the keystone above the entrance. Characteristic of this part are the concrete layers of Bentheimer sandstone with stonemason marks. The west side is from later date (about 1615) and much more sober. In this part the weigh house was established for centuries. Imposing weapon collection. The town hall has an impressive collection of arms. In addition to halberds, morning stars and peaks, it consists of a unique collection of medieval firearms, the so-called hook buses. The atmospheric council chamber is located on the upper floor. A large painting from 1657 (Nicolaes van Galen) recalls the times when justice was still being spoken here. Walking tour the Christoffelpad refers to the pilgrimage history of Hasselt in the 13th century. Hasselt and Amsterdam are the only cities in the Netherlands with a 'Holy Stede'. More and more tourists come to the city for this special past.
