Interior of the Dome Cathedral
Riga

The initial decoration of the interior of the Dome Cathedral was destroyed during the Reformation in 1524. Fragments of tombstones of the 14th century have been preserved, pieces of art in Mannerism style of the 16-17th centuries and Baroque; tombstones, epitaphs, the façade of an organ (1601), the pulpit (1641), benches, and marvellous stained glass windows of the 19th century. The first Dome organ was built in the 16th century. The present organ was built in the 19th century – at that time it was the largest and the most modern organ in Europe. Today the Dome serves both as an Evangelic Lutheran cathedral and a concert hall.

More About Riga

Originated from a small fishermen village, for centuries Riga has been an important part of the trade chain between Russia and Western Europe. A lively crossroad of cultures and backgrounds for over 800 years, the historical centre of Riga has accumulated an impressive cultural baggage and today is justly included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
