Iona is a small island of 125 inhabitants, located close to the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. The abbey was founded in the 6th century by St. Columba who introduced Celtic Christianity to Scotland. Although the abbey was dissolved by the Reformation and fell into ruin, it was restored during the 20th century. Today it remains an important site of Christian pilgrimage with its ancient spirituality kept alive by the ecumenical Iona Community, which was founded in 1938.
