This area of ponderosa pine forest north of Lookout, California is littered w/  mahala mat (Prostrate ceanothus), a flat low-lying plant spawning abundant dull purple flowers.  The plant is common in open conifer forests & plateau country in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
