Saugerties had its beginnings back in April 27, 1677, when the land was purchased from Esopus Indian Kaelcop, Chief of the Amorgarickakan Family in exchange for "a blanket, a piece of cloth, a shirt, a loaf of bread, and some coarse fiber". Today, Saugerties is home to several festivals, including the Garlic Festival. The area around Main Street and Partition Street is a fine collection of unique shops and restaurants that are not to be missed.
