Moab (aerial)

A 200' aerial view overlooking Moab, Utah.  With a 2020 census population of 5,366 citizens, it is the county seat of Grand County.  The area is a tourist hotspot for its dramatic scenery & easy access to nearby Arches & Canyonlands National Parks.  The area was settled in 1878 & Moab was incorporated in 1902.  During World War II, Moab was used as a Citizen Isolation Center for Japanese-American internees deemed as "troublemakers".  Moab's initial economy was based on agricultural but soon transitioned to mining of nearby natural resources including uranium, potash, manganese, vanadium, oil & gas.  Today the city is seeing an influx of second-home buyers w/ skyrocketing property values & rising cost of living.  The name Moab is likely from the Biblical name Moab which was the area of land east of the Jordan River.  There are others who believe the name is derived from the Paiute word "moapa" meaning mosquito.
