Monaco has 39,520 inhabitants on an area of 2.084 square kilometers and has the highest population density of any state in the world with 18,831 inhabitants per square kilometer. Of the population, 22.5 percent have Monaco citizenship. The state is located in the Maritime Alps and on the Côte d'Azur, the French Riviera, close to the border with Italy.
