Mono Lake Tufas

Mono Lake is in Mono County outside of Lee Vining, California and next to the Eastern Sierra Mountains in central California, USA.  The other-worldly tufas are calcium-carbonate spires that are formed from the interaction of fresh water springs and the alkaline water of the lake.  Mono Lake is an ancient lake that is about 1 million years old and it has no outlet.
