Nusret Minelayer is the minelayer vessel that started to serve the Ottoman Navy, and afterwards, to Turkish Naval Forces, under the orders of Cevat Pasha of Arapgir, Malatya. Nusret (originally ‘Nusrat’) minelayer was laid down in 1911 in Kiel, Germany and commissioned into the Ottoman Navy in 1913. The vessel was bought by private entrepreneurs in 1962 and served as a freighter by the name of “Kaptan (Captain) Nusret”. It was capsized offshore Mersin in 1990. The vessel, which was taken out of water in 1999 by a group of volunteers, was transformed into a monument along with an environmental arrangement where statues relating Çanakkale Battles were placed by Tarsus Municipality in 2003.
