Penamacor, Pillorie, Portugal

Pillories are ancient symbols of administrative and judicial autonomy. Public notices were proclaimed with them and, sometimes, sentences were executed. The pillory of Penamacor is considered a unique piece in the Castelo Branco District, as it still keeps the rings on its wrought iron hooks. Following the rule, it is located next to the Chamber, from where the decisions of the public authorities emanated. The adjoining terreiro served, first, as a public square and market and, later, when those functions moved to the outskirts, as a cemetery, a situation that was still verified at the beginning of the century. XIX. The date inscribed on the coat of arms of the village, on the south face of the capital, is 1565.
