Plaza Mayor is the histirical center of Trinidad, testifies to the opulenceof the city during the colonial period. The square was built in 1856 with materials from Philadelphia in the United States. Plaza Mayor was declared Unesco World Heritage Site since 1988 and all the old houses that suround it were built by wealthy entrepreneurs settled in Trinidad in the 18th and 19th century atrfacted by the flourishing sugar markets. Later, these houses were recovered by wealthylandowners. Today, most of these houses have been restored and arehome for museums. You can rest on the benches of the small beautiful gardens of this square and admire the statue of Terpsichore wich symbolizes dance and music wich are so dear to all the Cubans.
