Strijdom Square, once home to the bust (head and shoulders) statue of former prime minister J. G. Strijdom, a staunch supporter of white rule in the 1950s.
Ironically, the statue came tumbling down on May 31, 2001, exactly 40 years after South Africa was declared a republic.
